Monthly Turf Care Tips:
We are approaching another season for lawn care, and to simplify your life we will be offering tips and updates for you on this site as the year continues on. Please continue to check monthly to see if conditions change or what is the next treatment needed for your lawn. We will mention when a step is critical to apply for those who want to just maintain at a minimal level. We sell the fertilizer products mentioned and will help you decide on amount needed when you buy from us. You may also call or email us for any additional information and we will reply with your answer as soon as we can. We also are adding links to a good weather service.
January and February
This is the time you can sit inside your warm home and be glad there is nothing you have to do for your yard during the winter months. Enjoy your time off!
March and April
After a long winter, we are ready to get out and start enjoying yard projects. First off it is nice to know there is little needed. Hopefully the winterizer fertilizer was applied in November and all leaves and branches were removed. We recommend an application of 13-2-5, 30% scu with Dimension for crabgrass control during the up coming summer. Apply .5 lb. of N. early March till about mid April. If you have a very thick lawn, or lots of shade you can skip this treatment and wait till the May treatment. If you need to over seed this spring skip this treatment or the dimension will kill the new grass seed. We do not recommend rolling of yards because this causes compaction and does more damage than good. The only exception would be on seeding that was done in the previous fall to help press the roots down after the winter, this needs to be done with a light roller in early March if there are signs of heavy freeze out of seed. If lawn needs to be improved, over seeding can be done at this time. Make sure the ground is not too wet.
May and June
The lawn is green and growing fast this time of year. Make sure to keep your mower blades sharp and keep mowing often enough so you do not remove more than 1/3rd of the grass blade at any one mowing. Anytime from mid May to mid June you can apply a slow release fertilizer like our 30-0-10. The higher percentage of slow release the longer through the summer it will last. We recommend at least a 50% slow release and apply 1# N/1000 sq. ft. This is also a good time to apply your broad leaf weed control. It is best to spray this treatment for better control. If you decide to use a fertilizer with broad leaf weed control then make sure it is applied when the weed leaves are damp so this product can stick to the leaves. Over seeding and aeration of your yard can be done up till June 1st. Remember the earlier the better for any seeding to prevent seed form burning out from the hot dry summer.
June and July
The year is going fast and now the heat of summer is upon us, what should we do with our yard? This makes it hard on our cool season grasses this time of year. If you never had issues with grubs you can skip this treatment, If you need to treat you use grub control between June 20th and July 10th. This can be with a slow release fertilizer with Merit. Do not apply much fertilizer this time of year, but 1#/1000 sq. ft. would be acceptable as long as it is at least 50% slow release. If there is not an irrigation system, either let your lawn go dormant or get the hoses out and water. If you choose to water do it no more than 2 times per week and water slow and deep. Apply about 1 to 1 1/2 inches a week to maintain a healthy growing turf. If chosen to let it go, still put water on about every three weeks to keep the grass alive. Try to water early morning and finish by 11:00 am if possible. Never water late evening to reduce the chances of diseases. Most diseases will not kill newer grass varieties but they may appear to be hurt till cooler weather. Have a great summer!
August
All that is needed is to keep up with the mowing and watering. Avoid all lawn application when the night temperatures are high. Mow in the early morning after dew has dried and avoid mowing during the heat of day. This is a great time to hit the pool to cool off.
September and October
Summer is winding down and hopefully we are getting rain and cooler temperatures. We can now do our early fall applications. It will be best after the rain has started if we had a long hot dry spell. Anytime after September 10th thru October 15th, fertilizer can be applied. We recommend our 30-0-10 slow release at 1#/ 1000 sq. ft. If grass is growing you can also do a weed control. This is a good time to help the grass recover from the summer heat stress.
November
The year is coming to an end and time to prepare the lawn for winter. Make sure all leaves are picked up so not to mat the grass down. This is the most critical fertilizer treatment of the year. We recommend using our 35-0-5 quick release fertilizer. Apply when the grass has stopped growing and mowing is not needed any more for the year, usually around Nov. 20th. Make sure to mow one final time to make an even cut. At this time our lawn care service can treat tough weeds like clover with momentum. This ends another year of lawn care. Remember Moster Turf for all your turf needs.
December
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR
Other Issues
Weed control---- We recommend weed control in our monthy Moster Turf Tips.
Rolling---- We do not recommend rolling of lawn because this will cause compaction and limit air and water space in soil and hurt root growth, especially during dry summers.
Moles---- If you have moles you need to get rid of them with traps or a new product that is proven to work. Call for more information on this product. Once moles are killed, then you can press down their runs and level off the mounds to smooth the yard again.
Thin lawns---- If your lawn is thin then slit seeding is recommended to help thicken up the lawn. This will help reduce weed pressure and thus lessen the need for weed control products in the future. This can be done anytime in March, April, and till the middle of May, best results occur in late August through end of September.
Aeration---- Aerating the soil is also a good practice in spring and fall to reduce thatch and to help open up the soil to help with root development.
We can help---- We offer aeration, slit seeding and a full lawn care treatment programs, above our traditional services of seeding, sod sales and installation, irrigation installation and maintenance service. Please call for any of your lawn needs.
Do it yourself----
Those who want to do it yourself, you can rent the machines from a local rental store and get your seed, fertilizer and addition information on how to do it from us.
